| Author(s): | ODUNGWERU Patience Obeunezi |
| Abstract: | Social isolation is a significant concern among older adults, with far-reaching consequences for their mental and physical health. This paper explores the relationship between social isolation and mental health outcomes among older adults, highlighting the importance of understanding the complex interplay of cultural, social, and healthcare factors that affect elderly well-being. Social isolation is defined as a state of being physically or emotionally disconnected from others, often resulting in feelings of loneliness, disconnection, and isolation. The prevalence of social isolation among older adults is becoming increasingly high, primarily due to factors such as retirement, bereavement, declining health, and reduced mobility. Notably, social isolation is a major risk factor for depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline among older adults. To address this issue, the paper suggested that interventions such as community-based programs and technology-based solutions are crucial. These interventions can help reduce social isolation and promote healthy ageing. Furthermore, understanding the cultural, social, and healthcare factors that contribute to social isolation is essential for developing effective interventions. In conclusion, social isolation is a significant concern among older adults, with far-reaching consequences for their mental and physical health. The prevalence of social isolation among older adults is increasing, and it is essential to address this issue through targeted interventions. |
