Title: | The Impact of Exchange Rate Fluctuations on Poverty in Nigeria, 2000-2020 |
Author(s): | CHIJIOKE Ifeoma Silverline |
Abstract: | Different strands of literature have shown that a depreciation of Real Exchange Rate contributes to poverty reduction. This paper continues the same argument but improves on other existing literature by using Per Capita Income as a proxy for Poverty Rate, and analyzing the effects of Interest Rate and Exchange Rate on the dependent variable. The analysis has been performed using a time series data of the various variables for the period of 2000 -2020. Data on all variables were transformed into logarithm forms with the view to providing efficient and reliable estimation. The Error Correction Model was used to analyse the data after first differencing using the Augmented Dicker Fuller (ADF) test. The findings are quite interesting. A rise in the level of poverty is found to be significantly associated with fluctuations in real exchange rate. Interest rate on the other hand is found to have a positive but not so significant relationship with poverty rate in Nigeria for the time being studied. |
