| Abstract: | The study examined relationship between rural-urban migration and rural development in Akwa-Ibom State. The study had 3 objectives, and was guided by 3 research questions. Since the study was qualitative, it had no hypothesis. The study adopted survey research design to investigate rural-urban migration and rural development in Akwa-Ibom State. The study was carried out on Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 4,979,400 person according to the National Population Commission, 2006. The study adopted quota sampling technique to assign a quota of the sample size to 3 selected Local Government Area. For adequate representation, the 3 LGAs were chosen from the 3 senatorial districts in Akwa-Ibom State. The sample size of the study was 400 persons from 3 Local Government Areas. This study analyzed the demographic and all the data gathered from the field using simple percentage Based on the results obtained from the findings of the study, it was concluded that there is relationship between rural-urban migration and social development, economic development, infrastructural development, education and healthcare development and environmental development in rural area in Akwa-Ibom State. There are factors contributing to rural-urban migration in Akwa-Ibom State. The study recommended that the government and development agencies should prioritize rural development initiatives focusing on improving infrastructure, social amenities, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This will mitigate against the push factors that compels rural-urban migration. |
