Abstract: | This study assessed the profitability of cultured periwinkle in Andoni LGA of Rivers State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the cultured periwinkle farmers, examine the profitability index of cultured periwinkle enterprise, and evaluate factors affecting profitability of cultured periwinkle. Multistage sampling technique was employed in selecting a total of 120 cultured periwinkle based farmers from six communities in Andoni LGA Data were collected viaa well structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, farm budgeting techniques and multiple regression analysis were used for analyzing objective i., ii,and iii respectively. The result shows that (70.83%) were in periwinkle business, married (50.00%) and an active age range of 4150(49.17%) with a mean score of 42.77 were involved in periwinkle business. Also, farmers with 2630 years of experience (35.00%) with a mean score of 21.47 are more involved and most of the respondents had primary education (37.50%). They earned a monthly income range of N51,000N100,000 (39.17%) with a mean score of N71612.5. The result also shows that the gross margin was N20, 625 and the return on investment was N0.90. The R2 of 0.83 showed that 83% of the dependent variable was explained or influenced by the independent variables. The study concluded that cultured periwinkle business is profitable. It was recommended that more maritime communities that have friendly environmental ecosystem should invest in the business as it involves less capital and more profit returns. |
