Abstract: | Given the recent debate on diversification of the economy from oil export to nonoil exports in order to attain sustainable development in the economy, there is the need to examine the effect of non-oil exports on poverty reduction in Nigeria. Accordingly, this study examined the effect of non-oil exports on reducing poverty in Nigeria from 1980-2020. Using ARDL technique to analyse time series data sourced from CBN statistical bulletin and WDI, the study used Poverty Rate as dependent variable while Agricultural Export, Manufactured Export, Exchange Rate and Trade Openness (TO) were used as independent variables. The results of the analysis revealed that non-oil export has not significantly impacted on poverty reduction in Nigeria. This research therefore recommends that government should participate in agricultural production through the ministry of agriculture in order to boost agricultural export. |
