Abstract: | Some authors argue that we need to diversify our economy from oil export to nonoil exports in order to attain sustainable development. This study therefore, examined the effect of manufactured exports (one of the nonoil exports of the economy) on economic development of Nigeria. Data sourced from CBN and WDI were employed for analysis using OLS and ARDL technique. Unemployment Rate was used as dependent variable (proxy for economic development) while Manufactured Export, Exchange Rate and Trade Openness were used as independent variables. The results of the analysis revealed that manufactured exports have not significantly impacted on unemployment rate in Nigeria. This research therefore recommends that government should channel funds to this sector in order to improve production of manufactured goods so that they can be competitive in the world market and hence, demand for exports will increase and in turn bring about an increase in demand for labour. |
