| Abstract: | This study examined the effects of international trade determinants on agriculture trade balance in Nigeria from 1988 to 2023. The study used annual time series data as sourced from World Development Indicators (WDI) of the World Bank and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin. The techniques of data analysis adopted include: Unit root test using Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF), multicollinearity test using correlation matrix, bounds cointegration and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The result of the unit root tests showed that there is mixed stationarity among the research variables. The results of the bounds cointegration indicated that there is cointegration among the research variables. The results of the Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) model estimation revealed that trade openness had a positive and significant effect on net agriculture export in Nigeria; real exchange rate had a positive and significant effect on net agriculture export in Nigeria; foreign reserves had a positive and non-significant effect on net agriculture export in Nigeria; and custom duties had negative and significant effect on net agriculture export in Nigeria. Premised on the findings, the study concluded that international trade determinants play vital role in the maintenance favourable agriculture trade balances in Nigeria. It was recommended among others that the government should prioritize policies that promote export diversification and value addition across key agriculture subsectors. |
