Abstract: | The study evaluated influence of herdsmen/community conflict on the supply of cow meat in Abia State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic characteristics of cow meat dealers; determined the influence of herdsmen/community conflict on supply of cow meat; described marketing channels of cow meat, and determined the challenges encountered by cow meat dealers. Multistage sampling technique was employed in selecting the sample size of 90 respondents for the study. Data was collected using a well structured questionnaire . Descriptive statistics such, means, frequency, percentages were used to analyze the data collected. Results indicated that majority of cow meat dealers fells within an active age range of 3140 years (38.9%). on sex of respondents, males (77.8%) dominated the business in the study area. Majority (43.3%) of the respondents were married. On religion, household size and educational level, majority of the respondents were Christianity (52.2%), household size (55.6%) and primary education (36.7%) respectively. Findings from the study further showed that majority (36.7%) of the respondents affirmed that the supply of cow meat was very low as a result of conflict. Findings from the study indicated that majority (38.9%) of supply of cow meat passed from producers through the wholesalers and retailers to the final consumers. The problems faced by the cow meat dealers were inadequate fund ,market environment, lack of transport facilities, price fluctuations, government regulations/policies, storage/preservative facilities and competition in the business as they all had a criterion mean score (>3.00). Conclusion was reached that herdsmen/community conflict negatively affected the supply of cow meat, it was recommended that regulating boards for the control and monitoring of cow meat business be established, the security problem should be improved upon. |
