Title: Impacts Of Oil Spillage On Socioeconomic Status Of Fisher Folks In Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract: The study examined impacts of oil spillage on socioeconomic status of fisher folks in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic characteristics of the fisher folks in the study area; examine the effects of oil spillage on the socioeconomic status of the respondents; and identify approaches to curtail oil spillage in the study area. Multistage sampling technique was used in selecting the sample size of 150 respondents. Data were collected using a well structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as means, frequency and, percentages were used in analyzing the objectives of the study. Result indicated that 43.3% of fisher folks fell within the active age range of 4150years. Regarding sex (66.7%) dominated the artisanal fishing as male. Majority (46.7%) were married. Conclusively, respondents affirmed that oil spillage has a negative impact and has reduced their socioeconomic status to a very low standard. More so, route selection design; construction, personnel training, operation and maintenance are approaches to curtail oil spillage as they all had a mean value that are greater than the criterion mean (>2.50). Proper policies and regulations should be developed by government to monitor the activities of Oil Company’s in order to prevent oil spillage and discharge/disposal of waste products into water were recommended based on the findings.
