Author(s): | IDIOGBE Blessing & ISUKUL Araniyar |
Abstract: | This study examined the impact of financial inclusion on economic growth in Nigeria. Time series data from the period 2000 to 2001 were used for the empirical analysis. The data were analysed using the techniques of the Error Correction Model (ECM). GDP growth rate was the proxy for economic growth. The findings indicated that the impacts of GDP per capita and lending interest rate on economic growth in Nigeria during the period under review were significant. Domestic credit to private sector had an insignificant impact, while the number of commercial bank branches had a significant but negative impact on economic growth. Sequel to these findings, the study recommended amongst other things, that the Nigerian Government should work on the establishment of other types of financial institutions beyond the traditional commercial banks, with different business models across various customer segments. |
