Abstract: | The study determined the availability of welfare packages to inmates in urban and rural prisons in Rives State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique involving simple random sampling purposive sampling and Taro Yemen sampling was used in the selection of two hundred and sixty one (261) sample size which was used for the study. Data were obtained with the structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed with percentage and mean. The hypothesis of the study was tested with ztest statistics. Results of personal characteristics of inmates showed that males (81.25% and 80.95%) in urban and rural prisons respectively were more than female inmates (18.75% and 19.05). The mean age of inmates in urban prisons was 36.8 years, while that of rural prisons was 38.6 years. Welfare packages available to inmates in both rural and urban prisons were similar and generally fair. The highest medical package in rural and urban prisons was the presence of psychiatric doctors (84.58% and 80.95%) respectively; while the least was laboratory for diagnosis with 43.75% and 0% respectively in rural and urban prisons. For sanitation package, the highest was availability of toilet and bathroom with 100. % in both prisons, while the lease was the provision of toiletry facilities with 33.75% and 38.10% respectively. As for accommodation package, lightening provision for inmates was more (50.42% and 66.67%), while the least was sleeping space with 22.60% and 38.19% respectively for rural and urban inmates. The result of the ztest showed no significant difference between rural and urban inmates in the availability of welfare packages in prisons in Rivers State. The study recommends the provision of laboratories for diagnosis, toiletries, and enough sleeping space for inmates in both prisons. |
