Author(s): EZEBUNWA N. Justice & NYECHE E. Ezebunwo
Abstract: Environmental issues have been widely reported in recent years. From climate change to plastic waste, environmental quality is deteriorating at an unparalleled speed in human history. Environmental degradation is believed to have knotted to the dissimilar stages of a nation's economic growth, as the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory recommended. Notwithstanding the propagation of past studies, no accord has been reached in the arena concerning the authentication of environmental degradation and economic growth. This study purposes to assess the influence of environmental degradation and its impact on EG in Nigeria. The paper employed a vector error Correction approach from the period of 1988 to 2019. Several theoretical and empirical analyses on the Link between carbon emissions and its impact on economic growth showed contradictory conclusions. This research cantered on examining the impact of environmental degradation on EG in Nigeria. The discoveries suggest that there is a significant long run positive relationship among Gross Domestic product (GDP), Energy Consumption (ENEC), and Natural Resources (NATR), which has a positive influence on the economic growth in Nigeria while Openness of trade (OPENNESS) and Co2 emission (CO2) is negative which has no influence on the economic growth in Nigeria. This suggests crucial implications for policymakers. The analysis advocates that there is need for an urgent paradigm shift from the present means of promoting economic growth in which C02 emissions and other forms of environmental degradation are inherent.
