Title: Effect of Air Pollution on Residents of Portharcourt Metropolitan Area of Rivers State.

Abstract: This paper examines the effect of air pollution on the residents of Rivers State with specific reference to Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas. The questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Out of the 400 copies of questionnaires that were distributed based on the sample size, 387 questionnaires were returned and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study indicate that air pollution causes cough, irritation to eyes/nose/throat, skin irritation, poor or blurry vision, worsens already existing allergies, breathlessness, worsen symptoms of already existing asthma, bronchitis, and cancer. Based on the findings, the study recommends that suspected causes of today's air pollution should be researched and remedied by the appropriate authorities? adequate risk communication on exposure limits and access to health treatment should be launched through public health campaigns? relevant authorities should implement severe policies to prevent air pollution as soon as possible, establish baselines for air quality, and conduct further research into the socioeconomic effects of air pollution on the local economy and residents of Rivers State as well as the need for comprehensive campaign and advocacy for behavioral changes, the adoption of stringent air quality thresholds, the strengthening of existing laws, regulatory agencies, and the development of alternative livelihood structures for artisanal refiners be launched.
