Title: Economic Effects Of Oil Spillage On Artisanal Fishery Supply In Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract: The study examined economic effects of oil spillage on artisanal fishery supply in Andoni Local Government, Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic characteristics of artisanal fisher folks; determined the various artisanal fishing methods; examine the effect oil spillage on artisanal fishery supply and constraints of artisanal fishing in the study area. Multistage sampling technique was used in selecting 150 respondents as the sample size for the study. Data collected via structured questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as means, frequency and, percentages. Result indicated that 43.3% of fisher folks fell within the active age range of 4150years dominated artisanal fishing. Sex (66.7%) of male dominated the artisanal fishing. Majority of the respondents (46.7%) were married. More so (26.7%) of the respondents make use of nets for fishing activities. Furthermore,(32%) of the respondents affirmed that the supply of fish was very low as a result of outbreak of oil spillage. The challenges of artisanal fishing in the study area were open access nature of the fisheries, over exploitation, pollution, climate change, postharvest losses, marketing and distribution of fish products, failures on the parts of Nigerian Government, oil companies, and artisanal fishers’ none adherence to fisheries regulations, lack of credit facilities, lack of modern fishing equipment and use of explosives as they all had a mean value that is greater than the criterion mean (>3.00).
