| Abstract: | This study explored the effect of demographic and economic factors on the performance of SMEs in Rivers State. 397 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were selected from a population of 42,306 SMEs using two-stage sampling procedure. The data of the study were collected with the use of structured questionnaire which were distributed across nine local governments area in Rivers State. The study used both descriptive and logistic regression in analyzing the data. The result from the descriptive analysis demonstrated that 43.1% (majority) of the SMEs were in agriculture and 44.8% (majority) of the SME heads were 40 to 49 years of age. In addition, the study showed that the heads of SMEs were highly educated as 68.3% of them underwent tertiary education. The result of the logistic regression showed that at 0.05 significance level, age and taxation significantly decreased the probability of output growth. In addition, age increased the probability of employment growth however, no evidence of influence of taxation on employment was established. Further, education and experience increased the probability of output growth but reduced that of employment. Following this, the study recommended that, The Rivers State government should encourage youths to venture into entrepreneurial activities by providing an enabling environment for them to mitigate the negative implications of age on Small and medium scale enterprises volume of output. |
